I always assumed elves grew their wheat on trees, dwarves mined their mutton and beer from the rocky heart of the mountain, halflings inherited their food and drink from other hobbits, humans bought it from the magically infinite inventory of the town shop, and gnomes ate Phantasmal Force.
As for the drow, they harvest it all from grain spiders. They're like spiders, only their webs are made out of grain. (Or beer.)

I imagine most "deluded evil" types get huffy when it's pointed out that they ping the same as primal evil to the spell.

I imagine a typical conversation might go like:
"Hey, Ralph, you know, you're evil."
"That's just goodism."
". . . what?"
"Goodism. It's all about oppressing evil people by trying to impose your magic value judgments on us. You know what's really evil? Goodists!"
"But it's objective right and wrong."
"Listen, if I hear one more goodist trying to drown out dissent, I'm likely to give them a good stab in the eye, if you know what I mean? Listen. Goodism is all about allowing paladins special privileges to kill people, preserving the rights of the corrupt dwarven power structure to the gold they selfishly hoard, and most of all about forcing evil people to behave in a manner acceptable to good people. Why can't you just let us be evil without fighting to stop us? Isn't killing people and taking their stuff and preventing the free outlet of their political expression supposed to be 'evil'? Isn't good supposed to be about not doing that kind of stuff? And here you are, thinking that just because you've cast your little detect evil spell that you have a right to judge me and MY life."

(Ooh, completely off topic, but here's another approach to Charisma: it could rate how difficult it is to tell that the target hasn't persuaded/won over the person with the Charisma. In short, charismatic people are the people whom you always think you've won over to your side, even if you haven't. ^_^ And manipulative people are . . . the people whom you always think you're tricking, even though you're not?)
